The Black Rock Shooter franchise is back on our screens with their latest release, BLACK★★ROCK SHOOTER: DAWN FALL! ✽\(ˆ▽ˆ)-✽ The new anime, produced by Bibury Animation Studio, brings huke’s original character designs to a new setting.

In the 2008 series, Black Rock Shooter fights in the astral plains of emotions, working to help young Kuroi Mato survive the treacherous wasteland of human wickedness. Sort of like Puella Magi Madoka Magica…but with guns.
Lots of guns.

And drama. Oh, so much drama. Everything is made 10x more dramatic when done at gun (and knife, scythe, saw, whip…you name it) point. In this franchise, the characters came first, with Black Rock Shooter being originally just a cool, edgy concept based on Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid. Then the story coalesced around it and it became its own thing. I mean, check out how vast our stock of Black Rock Shooter figures and merchandise is!
Do you need to watch the anime or play the games to enjoy the figures? Not necessarily. But it’s a fun ride nonetheless, so why not? ʅ(́ ◡◝ )ʃ
With the latest anime release, we get to see a different iteration of these badass ladies. In Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall, the battle happens in this world, in a reality not very far from ours. The story takes place in 2062, in the aftermath of a terrible failure in a labor automation project. The Earth has become a wasteland hostile to human life where even the air is toxic. In such a broken world, even its heroes are messed up. (￣︶￣ ;)
Like Dead Master, here. Obsessed with her former ally, Empress, she is the S I C K in “lovesick.” This badlands yandere is absolutely dangerous. (ᇴ‿ฺᇴ)
And absolutely fabulous, too.
This Pop Up Parade by Good Smile Company captures her alien-like nature quite well. She perches on top of Alexander McQueen-esque shoes, looking over her shoulder. Is it love in her eyes? Or is it hatred? Lithe and toxic, she’s death herself!
This new design is so different from the original 2008 series (available and on sale right now, by the way) that some fans may be a little shocked to discover that this is actually their beloved Dead Master. But it’s an apocalyptic future, it’s kind of a given that things would be warped beyond recognition… (´～｀◦ ;)

In Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall, she is called “Empress.” Just like with everyone else in this iteration, some of her iconic pieces are gone, such as her cape and the glowing left eye. However, this is not the first time huke experimented with different outfits for her. Take, for example, the Inexhaustible version:

Actually, there is a reason for the lack of eye glow, but I won’t spoil it. But even without it, you can still see the energy emanating from them. This light of hope is what humanity has been looking for!
Don’t let the soft, pale skin deceive you: she is one tough Hemiteos Unit, if not the toughest one. She can wade through a caustic sea like it’s just a puddle. (*●Д●)
The addition of orange accents to her outfit gives her a cyberpunk feel, which I find very refreshing compared to the original monochrome design.
