Welcome to the Solaris Blog! ヾ( ʚ̴̶̷ .̫ ʚ̴̶̷ )ノ”
If you grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s, you may remember Professor Utonium. He was a physicist, single dad, golfer and all around great role model. The Professor set out to make the perfect little girl and concocted a recipe which included some sugar, spice and everything nice. After accidentally adding chemical X… yeah, the Powerpuff Girls were born but that’s not important. Professor Utonium gave us a holy grail formula for creating the perfect 2D aesthetic.
Too much sugar gives a one dimensional taste and will give you diabetes. Too much spice is too explicit leaving nothing to imagination. Everything nice sounds great on paper but in reality it is dull, monotonous and gets boring quick. If we apply Professor Utonium’s magic formula with the addition of a X factor to character designs, we get that perfect mix of elements you just gotta admire. What X factor checks the box varies from person to person but it's tough to argue that a tsundere who is also an imouto isn't a beloved troupe.

For a good example of this formula in action we can take a look at illustrator nanas work. nana has been producing art under their doujinshi circle, Luna Berry. nana's art style is characterized by its delicate and ethereal quality.
They often use soft lines, pastel colors and intricate linework to create a vivid atmosphere. Their original characters often exhibit a sense of vulnerability and innocence, with expressive eyes and graceful poses. At the same time, ecchi elements are subtly (usually) added which enhances the visual allure. Just take a look at the original character Ririsu Ichinose.

Ichinose was designed with long flowing twin tails and the detail Union Creative added is fantastic. Sculpting the strands of hair provide a dynamic look for the figure and the ribbons provide that bit of sugar. Ichinose’s big expressive eyes, small mouth and slight blush all combine well to give an aura of innocence and kindness.

In nana's original drawing, Ichinose’s outfit was wet and semi transparent. This is very hard to recreate in figure form but Union Creative did a nice job of bringing the spice and keeping the original idea intact. The white parts of her outfit do have an essence of being see-through and you can see the effort put into the shading and coloring. Translucent parts were used in her hair and the frills on her skirt to try to mimic the original art.

The skirt is the X factor here. nana's skirt design is truly a spectacular sight. The perfectly calculated length and transparent frills, allows you to enjoy it from every angle. The white thigh highs combined with the skirt show off Ichinose's thighs and give us the coveted zettai ryouiki. Winston Churchill's wise words still ring true. Skirts are at their best when they are long enough to cover the subject but short enough to keep things interesting ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡° ).

To add a bit of balance, Ichinose's pose is graceful and modest. Her knees are brought together and her arms are shielding her body. She meekly grasps the umbrella and it all around provides a nice visual.

The umbrella is the finishing touch. With it being large and red, it provides good color contrast to the pale and mostly white color palette. Wagasa are traditional Japanese umbrellas made of paper attached to a bamboo frame which is the basis of the design. Union Creative added the same level of detail to the umbrella and it is a fairly realistic visual. The top of the umbrella even has ribbing to match the bamboo skeleton below!
