Anime loves young, high school age prodigies. From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman takes a slightly different approach. What happens when those prodigies grow up, become some of the strongest fighters in the kingdom, and then return to drag their modest middle-aged teacher into the spotlight?

The story follows Beryl Gardinant, a sword instructor quietly running a dojo in the countryside. Beryl considers himself a fairly ordinary swordsman whose best days are probably behind him. His former students strongly disagree. When one of them, Allucia Citrus, returns as commander of the Liberion Order and recruits him as a special instructor, Beryl suddenly finds himself surrounded by former pupils who have gone on to become knights, adventurers and elite fighters.

That is the charm of the series. Beryl is strong, but the fun is watching an unassuming ossan gradually realize just how much influence he had on the people he trained. There is plenty of swordplay, but just as much enjoyment comes from his relationships with former students who still idolize their old sensei.

The anime returned forSeason 2 in July and is currently airing, with Beryl taking on another teaching role at the academy while his collection of absurdly successful disciples continues to grow. The second season has also doubled down on one particularly entertaining relationship: the rivalry between Allucia and Surena. And conveniently, both are now getting matching 1/6 scale figures from Nippon Columbia.

Nippon Columbia is not your typical figure manufacturer. It is one of Japan’s longest-running music and entertainment companies, with a history spanning records, video and games. Figures are a much smaller part of that business, so seeing the Columbia name on the box may feel unusual, but these releases are not coming from some unknown startup.

Allucia Citrus is one of Beryl's greatest success stories. His former pupil is now commander of the Liberion Order and has earned the nickname “Godspeed” for her exceptional swordsmanship.

Surena Lysandra went down a very different path. Rather than joining the knights, she became a Black Rank adventurer, the highest rank in the Adventurer's Guild, and earned the title “Dragon Twin Swords.” She fights with a pair of blades made using material from a dragon she defeated, giving her a much wilder and more physical combat style than Allucia.

Personality-wise, the two make a great pair. Allucia is the refined knight commander with silver hair and impeccable posture. Surena is the muscular red-haired adventurer who looks much more comfortable covered in monster blood. They also share one extremely important weakness: Beryl.

The Allucia and Surena figures lean directly into that contrast. Allucia gets the more bishoujo focused pose of the pair. Rather than putting her into a formal sword stance, the figure catches her turning back toward the viewer, letting her long silver hair flow behind her. It keeps the dignified knight-commander image, but there is a deliberate bit of fanservice worked into the body line and pose. Removing the usual mantle also leaves much more visible to admire...

Surena is almost the complete opposite. Her figure emphasizes the more wild nature of her character. The long legs, defined stomach and subtle muscle across the body give her an athletic appearance without turning her into a bodybuilder. The loose red ponytail and relaxed smile keep the pose casual, but the twin swords at her waist are a nice reminder that this woman reached the highest adventurer rank for a reason.

Paintwork on both seems to follow the same philosophy. Allucia gets the cooler palette of silver, blue and dark armor, while Surena's red hair and warmer skin give her much more visual heat. Displayed together, they should complement each other well.

The sculpt on both have pretty decent detail. Allucia’s long silver strands fan outward instead of dropping straight down her back, adding movement to an otherwise relaxed pose. Her cool expression and bright eyes contrast nicely against that motion and keep the figure from feeling like generic fantasy bishoujo.

There is a good mixture of fitted fabric, armor pieces and small metallic details in the outfits. The open neckline, exposed skin, boots, belts add several different textures that highlight bishoujo aspects and fantasy power simultaneously. There is definitely plenty of bishoujo appeal, but that does not remove the fact that both are master swordswomen. Their designs are supposed to be ecchi but not soft, and these figures nailed the balance.
