The Ultimate Guide to Display Action Figures: Showcasing Your Collection In Style!

As an avid anime enthusiast, building a collection of anime figures allows you to bring your favorite characters to life and immerse yourself in the captivating worlds you fell in love with. However, properly displaying your cherished figures is an art in itself.
Creating a visually appealing and well-organized showcase not only allows your passion to shine through but also adds a personal touch to your space. In this ultimate beginner's guide, we'll explore practical tips, creative techniques, and innovative ideas to help you create the perfect eye-catching anime figure display that will leave fellow collectors and enthusiasts in awe.

Choosing the Perfect Display Method

Selecting the best display method sets the foundation for an impressive anime figure showcase. There isn't a one-size-fits-all way to display collectible action figures but consider the following options and their unique advantages:

Display Cabinets:

The best way to display any collectibles you may have is going to be a dedicated display cabinet. Investing in a high-quality cabinet or glass case will protect your figures from dirt and shield them from potential harm. Any glass or acrylic display case will do the trick and can be selected based on your space and budget. The main focus when selecting a cabinet should be if it offers a clear view of your figures while ensuring their safety.

Shelving Units:

If you have a sizable collection, consider using bookshelves as a display option. They are an excellent way to organize your collection while providing easy access to them.
Bookshelves are an affordable option with significant flexibility in size. If you get a larger figure than you previously had, the shelves could be adjusted to accommodate it and could provide a more future proof option.
Similarly, floating shelves are an easily adaptable option for displaying opened figures but also a great way to show off those figures still in their original packaging. This may be the way to go if you have smaller boxed items like funko pops. They can also be a handy tool if you have a lot of action figures or customizable ones and want to change the pose/features on a regular basis.
Many large display cases and bookshelves come with extra safety features to make sure they don’t tip over. Whatever you decide on, make sure to utilize wall mounts or safety features so that your display case has the necessary support and remains a case… not a coffin!

PC Cases:

One popular method for the gamers and tech enthusiasts out there is to blend their love of computers and anime by using their PC case as an action figure display case. This can make some good extra use of a gaming PCs RGB lightning and keep your waifu or husbando right next to you as you level up or frag out!
This can be a very aesthetic way of displaying action figures but it does have several downsides. Make sure to monitor the heat levels inside the case and of any component the figure is near. Also, make sure there is sufficient airflow to minimize heat during intense use. You will also have to do a bit more maintenance if you go this route as every PC case is a portal to an alternate dust filled dimension.

Curating the Perfect Display

Curating your anime figure display involves careful consideration and creative flair. Sticking similar figures on a shelf and calling it day should look ok, but to ensure a visually stunning and cohesive showcase a bit more is needed. Here are a few things every collector should consider:

Theme and Grouping:

Arrange your figures based on themes, series, or characters to make a visually cohesive display. Group action figures from the same anime or similar genres together to enhance the overall aesthetic and tell a story through your collection.
Placing your OG Star Wars collection next to a bunch of bikini-clad anime girls may not be that visually appealing. Having those same Jedi battling your Transformers collectibles is probably a better approach.
Another simple idea to display action figures effectively would be to match the color of the stands if you don't think the designs for your collection work well. Have a lot with a black base? They may look good together.

Dynamic Composition:

Experiment with different poses, angles, and heights to form dynamic compositions. Mix and match figures with varying sizes and positions to add depth and visual interest to your display. Consider using acrylic risers or platforms for a sense of depth with different levels within your showcase.

Incorporating Artwork and Memorabilia:

Complement your figures with related artwork, posters, or merchandise from your favorite anime series. Hang posters or frame and display art prints strategically to produce a visually immersive experience. The area around your display is just as important as the display case or shelf. A nice poster or tapestry near some floating shelves can really tie things together.

Lighting and Atmosphere

There is nothing wrong with keeping your figures locked away in their box but for those who like to show them off, there are a few ways to maximize the wow factor! Lighting is one of the key factors in enhancing the overall visual impact of your action figure display and one of the most versatile. Consider the following lighting techniques to ensure the perfect ambiance:

Natural Light:

Placing your display in a sunny area of your home is the simplest and most cost effective way to lighten up your collection. If you have enough space near windows or areas with ample natural light, you can utilize it to showcase the intricate details of your figures. This may be the simplest to make your display case more vibrant but it is not the easiest to implement correctly.
If using this method, be cautious of excessive sunlight that could cause fading or damage over time. Heat is another factor which can cause the plastic to melt, even in temperature controlled environments. Keeping them in the box and original packaging still puts them at risk. You can use black out curtains or blinds to regulate the amount of light entering your display area but you may want to monitor the temperature of your shelves throughout the year.

LED Lights and Spotlights:

When incorporating LED lights and spotlights into your anime figure display, it's important to strike a balance. Avoid overpowering your figures with excessive lighting and make sure that the lighting setup complements the overall aesthetic and theme of your collection. Experiment with different lighting positions, intensities, and colors to find the perfect balance that showcases your action figures in the best possible light.
By positioning spotlights strategically, you can draw attention to specific figures or key elements within your display. This technique helps highlight focal points and adds a sense of drama or emphasis. Spotlights can be used to add contrast and shadows, adding depth and dimension to your display. By casting light at different angles, you can highlight the contours and textures of your action figures, enhancing their visual impact.

Colored Lighting:

Colored lights allow you to generate a specific mood or ambiance that aligns with the theme or atmosphere of your anime figures. If you choose warm colors like red, orange or yellow, it may evoke a cozy and inviting feel. They can add warmth and depth to your display, especially if the character is passionate or fiery. It could be great for some action themed poses as well.
Cool colors like blue, green and purple on the other hand have a more serene and tranquil atmosphere. They can be ideal for depicting calm or mysterious characters, or for recreating scenes with a nighttime or otherworldly feel. Another option is experimenting with complementary colors for visual contrast and make certain figures or elements stand out. For example, placing action figures with warm tones against a backdrop of cool-colored lighting can make a pretty eye-catching effect.

Additional Ideas to Support Your Display

Mirrors can be another fun addition to figure displays! Placing a mirror behind your figure creates a reflective backdrop and gives the illusion of depth, helping make your display feel more dynamic. This can work particularly well for figures that feature a lot of detail or have great assets ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) that aren't visible from the front. Mirrors can also help reflect light and brighten up your display. If you have a dimly-lit display area, consider adding a mirror to help bounce light around and produce a more vibrant display. Experiment with different mirror placements and styles to see what works best for your collection.
Rotating bases can be a great way to add some action and interactivity in your action figure display case. A rotating base can help you visualize all the intricate details of your action figures. By slowly rotating the base, you can give viewers a chance to see it from different angles and appreciate all the little details. You can find rotating bases as a separate item or buy a display case with built in rotating stands.
Lastly, consider adding some props. The addition of props can create a unique scene and work especially well with detailed pedestals. There are also some common themes to alternative outfits so it can also help to bring together a part of your collection nicely. Just about every popular character eventually gets a swimsuit version figure, and creating a beach scene with the addition of sand and artificial water can add a little extra something special! Have fun with designing your action figure display case!

Maintenance and Care

To guarantee the longevity and pristine appearance of your collectibles, regular maintenance is essential. If you are going to be buying expensive figures, it is not hard to keep them looking great. Keep them clean and follow these care tips:

Dusting:

Occasional cleaning will keep your collection in good condition and all that is really needed is some light dusting. Displaying your figures in a closed cabinet or display case definitely helps but won’t be 100% effective. One of the best tools is compressed air. A gas duster can get dust out of tight spaces or areas with lots of crevices or hard to reach places. This also helps minimize your handling of the figurine, just make sure it won't fall over! After blowing it away, you can simply wipe up the area with a Swiffer or clean cloth. If you don’t have access to compressed air, a makeup brush or cotton swab can be used to gently remove any dust/debris.
To keep your collection looking its best, try dusting at least once a month! Avoid using water or harsh chemicals, as they may ruin the paint or material of the figures. If you feel that dusting alone is not enough, use a small amount of soap and water, and be sure to dry the figure thoroughly after it is clean. For figures with decals or stickers that could come off, use a wet cotton swab or toothbrush and carefully clean around those areas. Keeping your collection clean requires minimal effort so don’t avoid doing it!

Protective Measures:

It is going to be best if you can minimize contact with your collection. If you need to touch your figures, best practice is to wear gloves. At a minimum you should always wash your hands before handling or cleaning your figures. The natural oils on your skin can cause your collection to get grimy and frequent touching will cause them to develop a “gently used” appearance.
When moving or repositioning figures, hold them from the base or the sturdiest part to minimize the risk of breakage to delicate parts. Some typical fragile areas are the hair, weapons, or wings. Areas that are thin are at significantly higher chances of breaking. Avoid using excessive force when changing poses or trying to assemble/connect pieces.
A reoccurring area of difficulty is connecting figures to the base. When it won’t connect with a little bit of pressure, don't try to force it. Make sure you are trying to connect it properly and check if there are any defects (like an extra bit of plastic). You may have seen many forums suggesting the use of a hair dryer to heat up the trouble part but that can cause permanent damage so is not recommended. Just be gentle and patient and slowly work towards having a solid connection.
An extra consideration is to use museum or earthquake putty to secure your figures. These are designed to not leave residue or damage to various kinds of memorabilia and collectibles including figures and help keep them secured to display cases. They may be marketed more to those in earthquake prone areas but they are also effective against the occasional bump that may send your figures toppling over. Action figure display cases with a door may keep unwanted hands from children off, but there is always a chance for accidental rocking. By implementing these maintenance and care practices, you can preserve the quality and longevity of your anime figures.
