Umamusume: Pretty Derby has always had a slightly ridiculous elevator pitch. Take famous Japanese racehorses, turn them into anime girls, send them to school and have them race in front of packed stadiums before finishing with an idol concert.

And among the huge cast, Rice Shower has always been one of the easiest characters to get attached to. Rice is shy, timid and convinced that bad things happen simply because she is around. That insecurity is not completely random either.

The real Rice Shower became famous for upsetting two enormously popular historic runs: Mihono Bourbon’s Triple Crown attempt and Mejiro McQueen’s bid for a third consecutive Tenno Sho (Spring). That earned the horse a reputation at the time, and Umamusume turns that history into part of Rice’s personality. She is not mean or villainous at all. She just believes other people see her that way.

Rice’s Yummy Dreamy Fairy version gives a very different look to her. The costume comes from the game’s Harvest! Full! Great Harvest Festival training scenario and is connected to the song Uma Sugi! Gourmet Parade. Instead of Rice’s usual dark, gothic racing outfit, we get an extremely bright mint-green apron dress covered in food-inspired decorations. Alter even based the pose on the choreography from the song.

Basically, gloomy little Rice has been put in charge of the harvest festival and she looks adorable. The mint-green dress is much brighter than Rice’s usual navy and black palette, while the white apron gives it that storybook baker/fairy look. Small vegetables and food motifs decorate the front, including carrots and other harvest-themed details. There is a lot going on, but the pastel colors keep it cute rather than overly busy.

The layered skirt is also nicely done. The lighter outer apron sits over a fuller mint-green dress, with white frills and patterned edging giving the lower half plenty of texture. Gold trim adds a little polish, while the repeated green, yellow and orange details tie everything together.

Rice’s long hair gives all those pastels something to contrast against. The slightly windswept shape adds some movement to what is otherwise a very cute performance pose. Her ears and tail also keep enough of the darker original palette around that the figure still immediately reads as Rice Shower.

This version gives Rice a much brighter expression than we usually see from her. She actually looks like she is enjoying being on stage rather than worrying that she somehow caused the entire harvest to fail. For a character whose story revolves around wanting to make people happy, there is something especially fitting about seeing her in such an openly cheerful costume.

Alter also includes interchangeable parts that let you display Rice with two different expressions and two pose variations. One pose has her arm stretched upward in a more energetic idol-style gesture, while the alternate parts change the presentation enough that you can make her feel either more lively or more reserved.

Overall, this is a very different Rice Shower figure and that is probably its biggest strength. We already have excellent figures of her looking serious, gothic and race-ready. Yummy Dreamy Fairy gives us the other side of Rice: sweet, hopeful and finally allowed to look like the heroine she always wanted to be.
