Hope you’re having a great summer! I certainly am. I have been frolicking in the crystalline beaches of Golden Apple Archipelago for most of it. ( ´‐ω‐）
Looking for treasure in every nook and cranny, wandering through the mirages of my friends’ hearts… essentially, getting the most out of summer before it vanishes. All that without breaking a sweat or getting sunburnt! (つ▀¯▀)つ
All I wanted to say with this is that if you’re an otaku, or a gamer or both, you need to come play Genshin Impact. But read on, because if the promise of good times in paradise beaches isn’t enough to lure you, I bet I can still convince you to dive into these waters! ＼( ^ω^＼ )
Today’s featured Early Birds are the 1/7 scale figures of Aether and Lumine, the twin protagonists of Genshin Impact!
Shanghai-based game developer miHoYo lures otaku into its beautiful, idyllic worlds through stunning character design. (ृˊ◡˴⁎৲ु॰∘♡ And these are only two characters out of a total of 51 playable characters! Actually, by the time this post goes live, we will have 53 playable characters, since three new heroes will introduce the new element to the game. Just take a look at their preview page! (｡･ρ･)
They are all very unique in design, personality, abilities and animation. Each one of them has enough backstory to make an anime series just about them. The world of Genshin Impact is so vast, so detailed, and so full of possibilities that many newcomers actually feel very lost when they first start. My adventure rank is 45, and I still have no idea what I’m doing. But the good news is…that’s exactly the point. (-‿-)
Genshin Impact is all about exploration, about enjoying the journey, and making friends along the way. The pantheon of playable characters is formed essentially by the great people you meet and bond with in your travels. There is no right or wrong path, only the path *you* make. So, very aptly, the protagonists are also called “Traveler” by everyone.
You can choose to play as either of the twins:
Aether is the eldest (as eldest as a twin can be). This is a nuance that was lost in translation, but that adds a different depth if you play the game with Japanese audio + English subs, just like an anime. Personally, I definitely recommend playing it like that. (・。-;
Lumine is the youngest, the sweet and cute imouto. The game seems to have a bias towards Aether, to follow the trope of hero onii-chan and missing-maiden imouto. BUT, as I said before, there is no right or wrong, only you. Choosing Lumine will not cause you to miss out on anything regarding the main story arc; in fact, in certain encounters a Lumine player will have further depth of emotion…simply because she’s the imouto! (´ ⌣`ʃƪ)
The 3D-fied anime design translates quite easily into the figure world, as you can see in today’s featured scale figures.
They’re so perfect I almost expect them to move like in the game! All the minute details of their character designs are recreated: from the flowers in Lumine’s hair to all of the golden regalia in Aether’s outfit, everything is imbued with life and movement, just like in the game. Well, better, because as a figure, it’s palpable. (つ✧ω✧)つ
MiHoYo hasn’t been super exclusive about which figure maker will summon their characters to this world, trusting them to the great and well-known makers Good Smile Company, Kotobukiya, and APEX (for Honkai Impact figures). It has also released some figures under its own brand.

But back to Aether and Lumine.
After being separated by an unknown god as they were preparing to continue on their journey, the twin you selected awakes in the world of Teyvat. In Monstadt, to be precise. This area, protected by the archon of wind (or “anemo” as it is referred to in the world of Genshin Impact) and freedom, is blessed with gentle winds that caress verdant hills atop tall, rocky cliffs.
Those same gentle winds also welcome the Traveler to this world. In fact, at the beginning of their journey, anemo is the first element they become attuned to!
The breeze hinted at by the movement of their clothes makes this scene feel so refreshing…combined with the soft color palette, it all really brings you back to Monstadt! Notice how Aether’s colors don’t weigh down on the vibe of his figure even though they’re darker.
A well thought-out design and a good choice of pose helps with the atmosphere: the lining of Aether’s cape is a warm yellow, the same hue that colors the skies of Teyvat at sunset. Against such a backdrop, his dark clothes don’t feel as harsh. Meanwhile, the lining of Lumine’s cape is a streak of light blue with a gradient like the haze on a summer day. For outlanders, these two surely blend into the natural beauty of Teyvat! As if they were two flowers born in this world.❀✿
However, I have always been Lumine-biased. ʅ(́ ◡◝ )ʃ And in this scale figure, I find that she blends with her scene better, because she also matches the wildflowers at her feet!
The base in the Genshin Impact figures made by Kotobukiya have a diorama feel to them due to their high level of detail. You can see the same type of base in the scale figure of Barbara, which will be released in September 2022.
