Anytime you want to increase the popularity of something, just slap an anime girl on it. Ryuo no Oshigoto sparked a new interest in shogi, Garupan helped create more military otaku and Mahjong Soul is making mahjong more accessible to a global audience.

Originally created in China, mahjong is a tile-based game that has spread throughout Asia. Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck and may seem complicated to learn, but fear not! Mahjong Soul can guide you on how to play and ease you into it. As a bonus, you will unluck cute anime characters as you progress. Mahjong Soul has adapted the traditional Japanese riichi mahjong rule variation to digital form.

Developed by Cat Food Studio and published by Yostar, Mahjong Soul combines the strategic depth of mahjong with engaging anime-style characters and storylines. It received a global release back in 2019 but has just recently been added to steam! It has enjoyed a fair bit of success in Japan and was adapted to an anime in 2022 with a follow up ONA earlier this year. If you get the chance to walk around Tokyo’s otaku hub, Akihabara, there is a good chance you will see some advertisements promoting the game.

One of the standout characters in this game is Yui Yagi, a fan favorite known for her quirky personality and unique design. She is a genius with an IQ of 180 and while she may be book smart, she has a bit of trouble interacting with others. Finding it difficult to interpret others emotions, she longs to understand others and to be accepted. She also has a poor sense of taste with coffee and snacks being her go to foods. This makes her a joy to interact with in game and easy to connect with.

This figure of Yui’s Full Bond in-game skin by Reverse Studio is a fantastic recreation.

One of Reverse Studio’s biggest strengths is in their painting ability. The colors they choose and shading techniques applied make for a very realistic and detailed visual. The paved road base, tree swing and flowers all have intricate levels of care applied for max effect.

Yui herself, the star of the figure, has the same level of attention. Her soft expression, big eyes and tiny mouth is moe to the max. The sculpt of her hair may be the weakest part of the figure but it is still more than acceptable. The added mahjong themed hair clip and flower ornament do a good job creating depth and focal points.

Yui’s outfit is cute and faithfully reproduced in figure form. The texture of her knit sweater is lifelike and her jacket has nice accents on the cuffs and pockets. Her tights have nice shading to simulate different levels of sheerness and minor accessories like her ring, beloved coffee and iconic butterfly look decent.

The pose is the perfect combination of elegance and innocence. Her visual appearance shows a well adjusted young lady who is well put together, but simultaneously there is an air of vulnerability and shyness. With one leg outstretched and the other retreating close to her body we see the two sides of her personality. A genius who struggles to fit in.

One thing to note that is not shown in the promotional pictures is that additional support may be needed. In some pictures a clear plastic support piece has been shown under the swing.
