Welcome to the Solaris Blog! ヾ( ʚ̴̶̷ .̫ ʚ̴̶̷ )ノ”
“Just a normal person swinging cursed tools around…” is the biggest understatement of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. I haven’t seen a badass female character like this in ages!┌(▀Ĺ̯ ▀-͠ )┐
Today we’re taking a look at the 1/8 scale of Maki Zenin by Kotobukiya!
For those who haven’t been keeping up with the numerous shounen releases, here’s a quick intro:
Jujutsu Kaisen, or JJK for short, is a shounen anime produced by studio MAPPA, the same studio responsible for Attack on Titan! One season with 24 episodes + a prequel movie have aired so far, with season 2 being hinted at being released sometime in 2023 (just like this scale figure!).
In the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, humanity’s resentment and darkest desires can take on a tangible form, called “curses.” ༼´Ĺ̯`༽
In order to prevent people from getting hurt by said curses, those who possess the ability to see them learn how to manipulate the same essence that those curses are made of, but to destroy them. In all of Japan, only two schools are dedicated to training students in the art of jujutsu sorcery: the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College and the Kyoto Metropolitan Curse Technical College, shortened to Tokyo Jujutsu High and Kyoto Jujutsu High.
Maki Zenin is a second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Her straightforward nature wins the hearts and the (trembling) ( •́ ﹏ •̀ ├┬┴┬┴ respect of her juniors, who call her “Maki-senpai.” In fact, they’re ordered to refer to her as such, as she shuns the Zenin family name.
Following her rebellion against their sexist and senseless standards, Maki excommunicated herself from the family with the aim of becoming a jujutsu sorcerer and to only return as the head of the Zenin clan.
The Zenin are powerful, and are able to prevent her from rising in rank by pulling strings in the administration of the schools…but that’s the extent of their power. Because Maki’s strength is already a legend among her peers. Her second-grade rank betrays her fourth-grade abilities! Which, surprisingly, are not the same as other jujutsu sorcerers…because she’s not a sorcerer. Maki-senpai can neither see curses nor infuse weapons with her own cursed energy. She’s an awesome example of how you don’t need to be gifted at something in order to do it well; sheer, unwavering will is an immense power on its own. ᕦ( º U º )ᕥ
This amazing 1/8 scale figure by Kotobukiya captures exactly that: the swagger of someone who excels at something others never thought they would. There is no better scene to portray this than the most epic moment from the anime: the battle against the curse Hanami.
Maki usually wields a polearm, and quite expertly. Other figures of her show her using her naginata, from the prize to the Figuarts mini and to the recently-released Pop Up Parade.
The Nendoroid has the whole arsenal that was seen in the anime, of course. Minus Slaughter Demon, because Yuji broke it. ( ̄︶ ̄ ;)
Unfortunately, those weren’t enough to even tickle the special-grade curse that appeared; so Maki had to switch to the Playful Cloud, a “disgusting” weapon to use (her words, not mine!). ╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛. ) ╭
She fits right in with the other characters of this series! If you look at our store, you will see that Kotobukiya has already released the main cast of Jujutsu Kaisen as action-packed 1/8 scale figures. Gojo, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara are all available now at our store; Nanami(...n) will be released in November 2022 and Inumaki is scheduled for January 2023. But you still have time to pre-order these two stoics, so don’t miss out!
Maki and her fluffy, sunshine-scented squire, Panda are the latest releases announced in this lineup. ฅʕ ᵔᴥᵔʔฅ
Panda will come one month after Maki, in March 2023. He’s currently on a sweet Early Bird deal: if you pre-order now, you save 17% on your order! (⌒▽⌒)
Even excommunicado and held back a couple of grades this jujutsu sorcerer S L A Y S. Seriously, I’d fight Nobara to the death for the right to carry her weapons. Maki-senpai, notice me!(○´Δ`人) Just look at that confident expression; truly a glimpse into the serene mind of someone who knows exactly what she’s doing. (`∪´)
And that stance! Kudos to the tailors at Tokyo Jujutsu High for making uniforms that can endure battle and don’t get in the way. I’ll agree with Nobara that they’re not the most stylish, but damn, these looks are functional! Anyone who’s worn a pencil skirt knows that even the most elastic among them only has two modes: ride up to your waist or tear (sexily (◔ᴥ◔) ).
Every wrinkle of her clothing, every subtle movement of her hair is tense with the energy coiling up within. Maki prepares to strike like a lioness, with fury and determination! (ง ͠ ᵒ̌ Дᵒ̌ )▬▬ι═══════ﺤ
