Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!
It is an occasion to make known all those romantic feelings you’ve long kept hidden (❤U❤) but in Japan, the burden of confession falls on the ladies!
The declaration of love comes in the sweet form of chocolates. At work, male employees may get giri choco (義理チョコ, “obligation chocolate”) from their female colleagues. Those are cheap, ready-made chocolates given just to be nice. Finer and higher quality chocolate is reserved for husbands, boyfriends and love interests. Many are even handmade and personalized!
In keeping with the Japanese way of observing the holiday, we’ve compiled a list of 10 of our favorite anime husbandos. Which one of these is worthy of your honmei choco (本命チョコ, "true feeling chocolate")?
If you’re not into husbandos, don’t you worry: the waifu issue is coming next month! ヾ(๑❛ ▿ ◠๑ )
Viktor Nikiforov (YURI!!! on Ice)
First up, our poster child over on Instagram for Valentine’s 2021, Viktor Nikiforov! The skating heartthrob conquered our hearts with his effortless and innocent charm.
Vicchan is a gift from heaven in the vessel of Apollo incarnate: a legend on the ice, an attentive teacher on the bench and a pure soul artist (ㅅ´ ˘ `)♡
Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Maybe you’re the type who likes a little more heat in your man. If so, brace your hearts, for the Hero of Ishval is here to spark a burning passion within you!
We’ve already done our fair share of gushing over him, but we must always pay His Majesty of the Flame the reverence that he is due. <( _ _)>
Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
How about the real thing? Because let’s be honest, Mustang is kingly, but he is still only a pawn.
The rebel prince Lelouch Lamperouge transcends the morality of peasants and becomes the hand that moves the pieces. He gives off an irresistible aura of mystery; we wish to know what really lies in his heart. But can we ever?
The draw of the void with which he surrounds his true intentions is as compelling as gravity. No need for the geass, we’ll be obedient until the end! (☼ Д ☼)
Gojo Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Speaking of irresistible gazes, how about Gojo’s turquoise jewels?
You really know how to make me cry, when you give me those ocean eyes… (*´∀`)
*ahem*. What Satoru has in power he has tenfold in blitheness, which is a great balance! Enough with the tired trope of heroes burdened with power; life is too short and too precious to be sulking around, right?
Kakashi Hatake (Naruto)
Maybe you prefer a brooding hero. If that’s the case, here’s another flavor of white-haired, masked teacher!
Kakashi’s struggles are carved into his face, which somehow remains approachable despite the mask that covers it. Maybe it’s his demeanor: he has a calm and grounding attitude. It really helps counter the rambunctious personalities of his students!
Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
So you’re the type who enjoys when your significant other doesn’t mince words. Confident to the point of arrogance, but not so far as to be a tyrant.
Purpose matters. It is the weight of the burden that drives life, even if it results in your personality becoming a little prickly as a result. But it’s okay; we know that the heart of Levi Ackerman beats true with his commitment to humanity! And hopefully, one day, for us...
Guts (Berserk)
He is no knight in shining armor; he’s the maddened hound that charges forth to strike fear in the hearts of his enemies. Beneath the violent, stubborn and coarse shell, there is still a very human soul. He is a feral mutt, but one we can still love.
Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)
Too much macho? OK, I get it: sometimes all you need is someone who doesn’t take life too seriously. Like Gintoki!
The hero of Kabukicho can, whenever needed, become a force to be reckoned with. However, he also enjoys life the way he wants it. If that means pachinko, Jump and falling behind on rent… Well... ʅ(́ ◡◝ )ʃ
He is that way because he wants to, and it (almost) never affects the value he puts on his friendships. A lovable loser. ( ¬ ‿¬)
Shanks (One Piece)
While the part of Gintoki that inspires others is the legend of his past, here we have One Piece’s living legend, Red-Haired Shanks! His laid-back and pacifist ways give him a charming fatherly aura. Who doesn’t love a powerful yet caring man?
He’s the only one who can pull off the dad-on-holiday outfit: the strategically unbuttoned shirt reveals tan pecs and abs to make barmaids across the Blue Sea swoon.
Dante Sparda
Speaking of fatherly figures, here’s CAPCOM’s hottest uncle, Dante Sparda! The boastful demon hunter captivates everyone with his brazen dark humor. The Sparda lineage is a bonus because, obviously, we can’t talk about Dante without mentioning the evil twin and irresponsible parent Vergil Sparda...
… and Vergil’s issue, Nero. So you have three personalities in one family: goofy, gloomy and somewhere in between. (⌒_⌒ ;) The boy sure has the best of both of them, plus naivete for enhanced charm!
Did we get you dreaming about your dream harem? ( ̄▼ ̄ )
Who are the husbandos you think should have been mentioned? Let us know in the comments!
Until next time ヾ(^∇^)
