Or so the song says. Love is a complicated thing, that's why it makes for such interesting stories. Among the multitude of romantic anime, Rent-A-Girlfriend is definitely a fun one to watch! Even I, a skeptic, not-like-the-other-otaku type ended up enjoying the series. Partly because of the comical portrayal of Kazuya's woes…and mostly because of the ladies he's surrounded by! (≧∀≦)
And guess what, today's Early Lovebird is the cutest girlfriend of them all, Sumi Sakurasawa!
One word to describe this girl: adorable. Kotobukiya could've picked any of the rental girlfriends available, but there's a reason why they chose Sumi-chan first: she's the perfect combination of beauty and sweetness! (⁄ ⁄>⁄ ▽ ⁄<⁄ ⁄)
Sumi is a first-year college student and newcomer to Diamond, the girlfriend rental agency. She is currently being trained by the pro Chizuru Mizuhara in the tricks of their trade. Though miles apart from her senpai in skill, there is great potential within Sumi due to her natural charm! (♡´艸`)
Which is, oddly enough, being shy and clumsy. Honestly, if it depended on the fans' will, they'd never allow Mizuhara to polish her to Diamond standards. She's already perfect in our eyes! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
Take a moment to admire her outfit: as always, Kotobukiya delivers an excellent sculpt, from the wrinkles on her shirt to the strands in her braid. They put as much care in their production as Sumi puts thought into her outfit choice!
In the spin-off manga series Kanojo, Hitomishirimasu, we learn that behind the cute sailor look there was a lot of deliberation! Fellow anxious introverts can relate to the stark contrast between their inner monologues and the world outside. Though Sumi doesn't speak much, her mind is always ablaze with unwarranted second-guessing. (◕д◕✿)
But her cute puppy eyes don't show the hurricane of thoughts inside. Sumi looks up at you through her bright pink bangs, cheeks slightly flushed with embarrassment. (*´ｪ｀*)
The base replicates the look of bowling lanes, the place where she had her first date with Kazuya. When trying to bowl, she almost went down the lane with the ball. Got a strike, though! The heavens bless this charming introvert with the best of beginner's luck. This beautiful figure of Sumi follows this illustration of her; a moment that, sadly, isn't shown in the anime.
