For fans of classic anime, the name Urusei Yatsura brings back a flood of nostalgic memories. The series introduced us to a host of unforgettable characters with Lum being the most iconic among them.
It has been almost 50 years since the initial serialization of the manga began in 1978 and it has been highly influential in the world of anime and manga. Urusei Yatsura spawned a new generation and influenced many future works with some common tropes even being used today… for better or for worse. All of those stories involving the geeky guy with a bunch of beautiful women like Tenchi Muyo! and Love Hina may have never come to be.
As a nod to Urusei Yatsura’s legacy, back in 2015 a life-size bronze statue of Lum was erected at Oizumi Anime Gate. This is a notable landmark located in Nerima, Tokyo. It celebrates the city's contributions to the anime industry and offers fans a place to connect with their favorite characters and learn more about the history of anime. With Urusei Yatsura taking place in a fictional town in Nerima and Lum being the poster girl of the series, it was an easy addition.
The story follows a high school boy who is incredibly unlucky. His life takes a wild turn when Earth is invaded by aliens and he is chosen to participate in a game of tag to decide the fate of the world. The boy faces off against the alien princess, Lum and after a misunderstanding they become engaged. For older anime fans, the slapstick style humor and romantic entanglements are all too familiar.
The original anime adaptation aired from 1981 to 1986, consisting of 194 episodes. Airing side by side with serialization of the manga, the anime took some creative liberties, adding a lot of filler content and original episodes. This is not unique to Urusei Yatsura, as many anime have needed to do the same. The multi-episode yelling as Goku powers his spirit bomb in Dragon Ball is a perfect example. These liberties gave it a unique charm but also led to some inconsistencies.
In 2022, a new adaptation was released that stayed closer to the original manga. The story was more concise, focusing on key story arcs. In addition to the revamped story, we got updated visuals with modern day animation techniques and updates to the humor to be more accessible to present day audiences. Old Japanese slapstick humor is pretty dated and cliche so the update is appreciated and they made sure to retain the quirky charm of the series.
If you haven't seen this classic, the remake is a great way to enjoy it! With the 50th anniversary approaching in the coming years, it is a safe bet that you will be seeing more of Lum and Urusei Yatsura in the future. Luckily for fans, we don't have to wait to get a great figure!
Ques Q brings us a stunning 1/7 scale figure of Lum scheduled to release mid 2025. This figure features Lum in her school uniform, standing atop a school-themed base in a dynamic leaping pose. Swinging her arms wide, bouncing around and the school motif, Ques Q captures her vibrant personality and mischievous charm.
The highlights of this figure is the fantastic sense of movement and nicely done painting that really pops. The mid-leap pose exudes energy and playfulness. This is matched by Lum’s cheerful expression, capturing the essence of her character.
The paintwork is exceptional, with vibrant colors that enhance the look of Lum’s hair, outfit, and accessories. The shading and highlights add depth and realism, making the figure a standout piece.
The sculpting is top notch, with attention to detail evident in the realistic folds and textures of her outfit. Lum’s pleated skirt looks amazing and the dynamic nature of the pose is reflected in the movement of her outfit.
Lum is usually depicted in her tiger stripe bikini and there are many figures of her with that outfit. For those who prefer more ecchi, bishoujo focused figures, something like Kotobukiya’s ARTFXJ figure might be more your style.
This figure is a fantastic representation of Lum and a great display piece for fans of Urusei Yatsura. The school uniform outfit gives more options and variety which is much appreciated. It captures the essence of the character and the charm of the series beautifully.
Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed!
