Remilia Scarlet is the owner and head of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She lives there with her loyal maid and confidante, Sakuya Izayoi, gatekeeper and gardener, Hong Meiling...

...and her younger sister Flandre Scarlet.

Remilia herself is a character whose elegance and allure are as potent as her supernatural powers. As the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she commands respect and curiosity in equal measure. Her character design, featuring striking light-blue hair, bat-like wings, and a penchant for elaborate, frilly dresses, encapsulates the essence of the Touhou aesthetic. Unlike traditional vampire portrayals, Remilia has a youthful figure, adding to her mystique. You could say she is one of the OG 500 year old lolis that have become an ongoing trope in anime and gaming. Her character design is completed with a parasol to add to her visual allure.

Despite her appearance (and often behavior) being childlike, and seems nonthreatening, she possesses formidable magical abilities and carries a fearsome reputation, earning her the ominous moniker of the Scarlet Devil throughout Gensokyo. Like her vampiric kin, she is sensitive to sunlight, rendering her weak when exposed to its rays. Consequently, she tends to confine herself within her mansion, which is thoughtfully designed with minimal windows to shield her from daylight, emerging only under the cover of night. While her natural inclination is to consume human blood, her light appetite (she smol so doesn't eat a lot) ensures that her victims seldom face fatal consequences from her feeding.

Her name, appearance, house, and clothing all indicate she is European in origin and emigrated to Gensokyo many years ago. The reason why she now resides in the scarlet devil mansion is never explained so it is up to the players own imagination. She claims to be a descendant of the world's most notorious vampire, Count Vlad Ţepeş Dracul… but this turns out to be a bald-faced lie.

Remilia is the main antagonist in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil for good reason. Remilia decided to release a mist over Gensokyo to block out the sun. Her main motivation was entirely selfish, she wanted to move freely during the day. After her scheme was discovered and halted, she was forced to use a parasol to shade herself when she wanted to move around during daylight hours.
