One of the best things about summer are the wonderful festivals. They are a dearly beloved event for Japanese people because of all the fun we can have! And, as shown in many anime the world over, it’s always an occasion brimming with potential romance. (✿˶˘ ³˘)♥(˘ε˘ ) Candlelit dinners? No thanks, I am more of a “casual saunter down lantern-lined streets while eating delicious street food” type of writer.
And if love doesn’t bloom, it’s the bonds of friendship that grow stronger, creating memories to be recalled during the darkest of our days. These are the moments that will make us smile when we’re broken at the end of the world, and with our last breath utter “Yeah, it was worth it.”
Food stalls line the streets, creating a symphony of mouth-watering smells that rises above the festival grounds. You can burn your tongue on hot takoyaki and then give yourself a brain freeze with some shaved ice. ミ●﹏☉ミ:
Then, you line up for a chance to win fun and beautiful prizes: show off your marksman skills at the gun shooting stall or the ring toss game. Or maybe your prowess lies in your nerves of steel and steady hands; if so, scoop up a goldfish with a paper-thin net or fish a yo-yo up from a whirlpool!
Eat your fill of yakisoba, okonomiyaki, yakitori, and karaage as you wait for the grand finale: the fireworks.
Have you noticed how (almost) everyone is dressed for the occasion? While you can attend a festival in normal, daily clothes, the dress code calls for a yukata. It is a cotton kimono-type robe with beautiful floral or geometric prints, tied with an obi and worn with sandals called geta. This outfit has the magical property of making anyone look good! Because of that, many anime characters have a yukata version either in figure or illustration form. Check out how extensive our stock of yukata figures is!
I wish I could show them all (´∀｀*) ﾌ but since time is limited and so is the stock of yakisoba at the festival, we’ll take a look at some of the best yukata figures!
Mizuhara Chizuru (Rent-a-Girlfriend)
I’ll admit this one is a liiittle bit of a stretch since her yukata is a different version: it’s one worn in traditional Japanese inns, another staple of romantic anime. It’s actually loungewear, though going out and about the property (and even the town) in it isn’t frowned upon. Besides, after a long night of eating and walking, it’s not uncommon for people to relax at an inn for the night!
She comes with two face plates: a tipsy one and an embarrassed one, for when she says too much (blame the sake ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ). Mizuhara will ship out April 2022; pre-order her today!
Fate/Stay Night
Of course, the Fate girls are all here too! An event like this is a welcome break from their world/timeline-saving duties. Illya beckons at Mash, signaling the group’s location. ヾ(・◇・)ﾉ Sakura cools herself with an uchiwa fan, because it is so hot close to the food stalls! Saber, ever the hungry king, munches on a caramel apple.
Walking on geta requires some skill, and even a master has her limits. So Rin chills at a cooler spot, while Saber (alter) plays with a sparkler!
Mahou Shoujo Madoka
Madoka and Sayaka got separated from the veteran Magical Girls as they went off to fight the witch of gluttony. Or maybe join her, who knows? And as they wander the festival grounds, they spot Iroha skipping away, her geta clopping happily on the stones. No curfews tonight; everyone’s here to enjoy the festival until the end! ( ノ^o^)ノ
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yukata are not just for women; men can also look quite dashing in them! Their styles are often simpler and more relaxed. They can show more of their chest, and the obi is worn lower, around or just above their hips. The obi knot is also much easier to tie!
These figures of Kaworu and Shinji will be soon coming to our store: the Angel comes first, sometime next week, then the child follows at the end of the month. There is still some time to pre-order them, so do it today!
Oh, and yes, Rei is already here. She just went to get a caramel apple after she saw Saber devour one. Not a fan of those myself, but since everyone’s having them…I might have one too. ( ﾟДﾟ )⊃
Overlord
By the river, OP couple Albedo and Ainz wait for the fireworks. She blushes like a young girl about to get her first kiss; he couldn’t care less. Ainz came for the quiet relaxation of hot springs after the festival, not the loud and crowded merrymaking. How he can stay so blasé next to a muse like Albedo is a mystery… ヽ༼xل͜x༽ﾉ
Rem (Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World)
Finally, we have Rem! While the folks of her franchise are busy having a tea party back at the Roswaal mansion, she snuck out to mingle with the people in the village. And look, she was successful in the goldfish scooping game and even got herself some cotton candy. Festivals are more fun with friends, but there is so much to see and do that you can enjoy it by yourself. But hopefully Ram will join her soon! (please, figure gods? 人 ´∀｀) )
