Welcome to the Solaris Blog! ヾ( ʚ̴̶̷ .̫ ʚ̴̶̷ )ノ”
When Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt first aired in 2010, it exploded onto the anime scene with a middle finger in the air, a sugar-high on Western cartoons and a fresh sense of humor that felt like nothing else coming out of Japan at the time. Mixing Powerpuff Girls aesthetics, South Park vulgarity and Gainax grade animation chaos, the series became a cult classic. The long-awaited sequel is finally here thanks to Studio Trigger!
The show features two angel sisters. Panty is a perverted free spirited girl and Stocking is her gluttonous goth little sister. They were both kicked out of heaven for bad behavior and sent to Daten City, a purgatory-like place crawling with ghosts. Their goal? Exterminate these spirits. Their weapons? The undergarments they are named after. Yes, really.
They're supervised by Garterbelt, a foul-mouthed, afro-clad priest with a mysterious past and questionable interests. Add to that a rotating roster of grotesque monsters, parody episodes, pop culture references and one of the most insane animation styles of the 2010s, and you’ve got a series that defies expectations and genre conventions.
Panty & Stocking never lacked style and the new Repent Version figures by Good Smile’s Pop Up Parade L line delivers. Based on their transformed, repentance angel forms, these figures capture the elegance and attitude of our favorite fallen angels.
Panty’s figure gives us the divine beauty and pure sass we expect. Clad in her shimmering white and gold outfit, she is given a confident pose, taking aim at the viewer with a defiant look in her eyes. The Pop Up Parade L size is big enough to really give decent sculpt detail without breaking the bank.
The frilly layers of her dress look good and give it a natural feel. The gold highlights pop beautifully against the white, and the subtle body lines accentuate her figure. Her wing like accessories are a bit simple but true to form.
Panty’s smirk is everything fans could ask for. Bold, smug, and just a little dangerous. Her long golden hair has a ton of detail for a PUP figure. The way it cascades in perfect stylized waves, full of volume and sculpted movement is done better than most non scales. The only question left unanswered, is she panty-less?
In contrast to Panty's nearly perfect figure, Stocking could be improved a bit. Her pose matches Panty’s making it very easy to display as a pair. Her expression shows her apathetic, deadpan nature well but the wink would have been preferred.
Stocking’s dress has equal quality in the frills and layers of her dress. The corset however, is missing a bit. The exposed skin may give a more ecchi appeal but to stay true to the original design, it should have been painted or done as fishnet at the very least.
The slight tilt of her head and softer, rounder mouth compared to Panty is a good choice. Her hair has her iconic two tone coloring, and while it looks a bit less detailed, that would be accurate to how the characters are portrayed. Stocking's hair is long, straight and clean.
For fans on a budget, Panty is absolutely a great buy. Stocking is decent at the non scale price point and worth considering. You can pre-order Panty and Stocking today and receive an early bird discount. Planning to buy both? They are also available as a bundled set!
