Welcome to the Solaris Blog! ヾ( ʚ̴̶̷ .̫ ʚ̴̶̷ )ノ”
If you watched Clannad back in the late 2000s, there is a good chance you can hear Dango Daikazoku just by looking at this figure.
Originally released by Key in 2004, Clannad is a romance visual novel following delinquent high school student Tomoya Okazaki and the people he meets in his hometown. The Kyoto Animation adaptation arrived in 2007, followed by Clannad: After Story in 2008, and together they helped turn the series into one of the defining romance anime of its generation. It also has a reputation for emotionally destroying people.
At the center of the story is Nagisa Furukawa, a shy third-year student Tomoya meets standing alone at the bottom of the hill leading to school. Nagisa had been forced to take a long absence because of poor health, leaving her behind her former classmates when she finally returned. She is timid and struggles with confidence, but once she decides something matters, she can also be surprisingly stubborn.
Her first major goal is simple: revive the school drama club. Helping Nagisa gives Tomoya something to care about outside his own unhappy home life, and their relationship gradually becomes the heart of Clannad. What starts as a school romance eventually grows into something much larger about family, adulthood and what it means to build a life with another person.
Nagisa absolutely loves Dango Daikazoku, or the Big Dango Family, a family of cute little mascots that most people around her consider old-fashioned. Naturally, that only makes her love them more. The anime pushed them even further into Clannad history by using Dango Daikazoku as its first ending theme. What started as Nagisa's slightly embarrassing obsession became one of the most recognizable symbols of the entire franchise. More than twenty years after the original visual novel, Key is still releasing official Dango Daikazoku merchandise.
So if you are going to make another Nagisa figure, putting some Dango at her feet is almost mandatory.
Rather than recreating Nagisa in her regular school uniform, MAGI ARTS has gone with a winter look that feels at home in Clannad. She wears a dark school coat with white earmuffs and an extremely long cream scarf wrapped around her neck. The scarf is really what gives the figure its movement.
The coat is also nicely sculpted. The lower half flares outward while Nagisa leans forward with her hands together, avoiding the stiff straight-up-and-down silhouette that winter clothing can easily create.
She looks slightly awkward, gentle and happy all at once, as though Tomoya has just said something that caught her off guard.
The default closed-eye smile may actually be my favorite expression. It is not dramatic, but Nagisa is not really a character who needs dramatic. Her appeal has always come from how sincere she is, and the soft smile fits that perfectly. MAGI ARTS includes an interchangeable face part, giving collectors some flexibility depending on how they want to display her.
Her hair is relatively simple compared with modern fantasy figures, but the sculpt does a good job recreating Nagisa's short brown hair and those unmistakable antenna-like strands on top. You cannot make Nagisa without the ahoge.
The paintwork also suits the source material. Nothing here is particularly flashy. Brown, cream and muted school-uniform colors dominate the figure, giving it the soft winter atmosphere associated with Clannad rather than trying to turn Nagisa into a modern glossy bishoujo.
Several tiny members of the Dango Daikazoku sit around Nagisa's feet, bringing some pastel color to the otherwise subdued figure. They are simple little blobs with faces, exactly as they should be.
Clannad is now more than twenty years old, yet it has never really disappeared. New collectors may know Key through newer titles, while longtime fans probably remember discovering Clannad through fansubs, DVDs or one very dangerous recommendation from somebody who promised it was just a cute school romance. Nagisa Furukawa is currently available for pre-order with an expected July 2027 release!
